The Pledge of Allegiance at the Mooresville Graded School District's November 15 Board of Education meeting was led by Riley Alexander, a 5th grade student at Mooresville Intermediate School. Mrs. Carr, one of Riley's teachers, recommended Riley for the honor stating, "Riley is a dedicated and respectful student. She shows leadership by completing her assignments on time, being attentive, and showing confidence in her work. Not only is she a great student, she is also a great athlete. Riley plays travel soccer and basketball, and she even horseback rides! Riley is a great student and I am proud to be one of her teachers."
Artist of the Month
The MGSD Board of Education honored MIS 6th grade student Kameron Bartley with the Artist of the Month award. Mrs. Gryder, MIS art teacher wrote in the nomination, "Kameron Bartley is such a creative student. Not only does she put her all into her work, but she keeps others on track while motivating and encouraging them in class. This project was using graffiti fonts. She chose the word ICE in her artwork to show how she could represent it with symbols like ice sickles, drawn bricks and a bold font. The font was created by Kameron just for this project. She is a joy to teach."
Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
Ms. Jennifer McNeely received the MGSD Board of Education's ABCD Award for the month of November. Ms. McNeely is a teaching assistant in the Exception Children's TSC classroom at Park View Elementary. She was nominated by PVES Principal Dr. Misha Rogers and Assistant Principal Ms. Hollis Baker. In their nomination, they said: "Jennifer has been in the TSC classroom since its arrival at Park View. Her dedication to kids and the work they do in that classroom is overwhelming. Jennifer takes an authentic interest in each child that she serves and the uniqueness that each one of them brings to that classroom. She is a strong advocate for her students and ensures they have all the support they need. On a daily basis you can find Jennifer loving on her students, giving them high-fives, encouraging them, praising them, and also providing structure, firm boundaries, high expectations, and respect in even the most difficult situations. Despite constant challenges in her job, she comes back smiling each day and speaks about how her students inspire her to want to do better for them. It is with great pleasure that we nominate Ms. Jennifer McNeely for the MGSD ABCE Award!"
The Instructional Highlight at the November board meeting focused on communication and student led conferences. Mooresville Intermediate School had students create two-minute reflection videos expressing how they felt about their first quarter performance. These videos created helped strengthen the relationship between students and teachers, as well as open the lines of communication between parents and their children. In addition, when making these videos, students gained insight into being accountable for their work and opened honest and encouraging dialogue between the students and responsible adults. Students created their videos in Seesaw and they were shared with the parents at the students parent-teacher conference. Please see one of our student's videos below!
