Pledge of Allegiance
Four third grade students from South Elementary School were selected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the May Board of Education meeting. Abigale Fabbiano, Manju Minnal Muruganandam, Sreeja Appala, Keren Jeon were nominated due to their leadership. In the nomination by several teachers and staff at South Elementary, the following was said about these four students:
"These ladies are incredible leaders at South Elementary. Everyday they exhibit integrity, responsibility, persistence and commitment to learning. Their smiles and kindness towards others is a true example of a South Star. Keep shining bright ladies!"

The MGSD Board of Education recognized the outstanding CTE program and SkillsUSA state winners and national qualifiers, as well as Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and Board of Education, at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 08.
Lula M Burrell Office Professional of the Year
North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professional
Ms. Jean Millsaps, Executive Administrative Assistant to Superintendent Mauney and assistant to the MGSD Board of Education, was named the Lula M. Burrell Office Professional of the Year! Each year the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals (NCAEOP) presents an award to an Educational Office Professional (EOP) in recognition of outstanding service to the Association and to education. A committee of judges at the district level selects one nominee from the nominations made members of NCAEOP as the District. The district winners are submitted for judging to the State level.
District 5 selected Jean Millsaps as their nominee for the Lula M. Burrell Office Professional of the Year at their meeting in November of last year. In March at the Annual State conference, Jean was selected at the recipient of this prestigious award on the state level.
Jean has been a member of NCAEOP since 2006 and has served as Local President and as District 5 President, as well as serving on several committees on the local, district and state level. The Mooresville AEOP unit sponsors a workshop each January and Jean has been the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ for the past several years.
Jean is especially proud to be chosen for this award, as Lula M. Burrell was the ‘school secretary’ at Tryon High School in Tryon, NC, which is coincidentally Jean’s high school alma mater. Congratulations Jean!
Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
The Board of Education honored Ms. Ann Foster, Mooresville High School In-School Suspension Coordinator, with the ABCD award at the May board meeting. Ms. Foster was nominated by the administrative team at Mooresville High School who said in the nomination:
"Ms. Ann Foster joined Mooresville High School this past Fall of 2017 as the In-School Suspension Coordinator. In the short period of time that she has been in that role, she has made a positive impact on the climate and culture of Mooresville High School through her interactions with students each day.
ISS coordinator is not a glamorous job -- nor a highly visible position -- but it is critical in establishing and maintaining the standard for appropriate student conduct at school. Every day, Ms. Foster comes to school with the mission of turning the negative into a positive. She greets her students with warmth and a non-judgemental demeanor. Every time a student comes to her room, she sits down with them for a one-on-one conversation to lay the foundation for a positive relationship. She holds the students accountable though firm encouragement and redirection. If certain students in ISS do not get along, Ms. Foster is able to de-escalate these situations with grace and poise.
Ms. Foster sees her job as an extension of the teachers' job by doing everything she can to make sure that students have classwork from their teachers so that they do not fall behind. She is always willing to assist, but if she can’t assist, she will go the extra mile of reaching out to a teacher during his or her planning block to explain the work to their student. She sends out timely communication to teachers and makes it easy for them to submit work digitally so students don’t fall behind. Teachers are thrilled that the work they are sending to ISS is getting completed by students and returned in a timely manner.
Ms. Foster has a job that very few of us could do. But she takes pride in her role, stays true to her convictions, and keeps the focus on helping students achieve despite their circumstance. Ms. Foster has made Mooresville High School a better place and is deserving of the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty recognition."
Artist of the Month
Miss Myah Campbell was selected as the MGSD Artist of the Month for May 2018! Myah is a first grade student at South Elementary School and was nominated by her art teacher, Ms. Penny Tucker. Myah's painting was based on the book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. After reading the story, students painted their Wild Things' head. During the next class, students drew their Wild Things' body using crayon. Then students painted their Wild Thing and created the background. To finish their creation, students wrote a short descriptive story about their Wild Thing. Myah's reads, "My Wild Thing's name is Connor. My Wild Thing likes to paint. My Wild Thing is happy." What a great Wild Thing, Myah!
First Grade Animal Projects: Inspiring young learners through project based learning
Young learners thrive when they're able to participate in interactive activities. In learning about animal habitats and ecosystems, South Elementary first grade students dug deep into content for a rich, comprehensive understanding in learning about animal habitats and ecosystems. This exciting project-based learning study combined science, technology, and literacy, allowing student choice, voice, and reflection. Proposed Policy 4326 RANDOM SUSPICIONLESS STUDENT DRUG TESTING went to the Board of Education for its first reading at the May 08 meeting. They will vote on implementation of this policy at the June 12, 2018, meeting. Please find a copy of the policy by clicking this link.
