Spotlight on People
It's an exciting time in MGSD!  The MGSD Board of Education congratulated five outstanding MGSD educators and acknowledged their wonderful accomplishment of attaining their National Board Certification at the February meeting.  The certification process is rigorous and collects standards-based evidence of an educator's accomplished teaching practice through performance-based assessments in four areas:
  • Content Knowledge
  • Differentiation in Instruction
  • Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment
  • Effective and Reflective Practitioner
The ultimate result is improved performance and achievement for North Carolina's students. Please be sure to congratulate these wonderful MGSD teachers when you see them!
  • Erika Akelman, MHS, English Language Arts/Adolescence and Young Adulthood
  • Lindsay Davis-Vickery, MMS, English Language Arts/Early Adolescence
  • Anne Gardner, MIS, Generalist/Middle Childhood
  • Taylor Horton, MIS, Generalist/Middle Childhood
  • Donald Peters, MHS, Art/Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood
Artist of the Month

Jennifer Agostini, MMS 8th grade student, received the MGSD Artist of the Month honors at the February Board of Education meeting.  Jennifer was nominated by her teacher Ms. Amy McComas who said:

"Jennifer enjoys reading, writing and science class and is a Senior Orange Belt in Taekwondo. She is looking forward to taking theater and chorus in high school next year. Jennifer was part of the inaugural class of theater arts at Mooresville Middle School last fall. One thing she enjoyed during the semester was being able to act and freely express emotions through words and actions. Jennifer wrote and performed this monologue for her class. It is about a girl who recently found out that her friends were only using her for their personal gain. She calls it “Miss Reliable.”

We recognize the many ways Jennifer demonstrates the H.E.A.R.T. of a Red Imp in her daily routine. For those reasons, and for her consistently positive efforts and contributions to our fine and performing arts classes, we nominate her as the Mooresville Middle School Artist of the Month!"

ABCD Award

The MGSD Board of Education recognized Donna McConnell, Office Receptionist at South Elementary School, at the February Board of Education meeting for always going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty.  Ms. McConnell's principals and colleagues' said the following in their nomination of her:

"We are nominating “Ms. Donna” because she is the perfect recipient of this award.  Although she wears many hats at South Elementary her main responsibility is being the receptionist for our front office.  She juggles many responsibilities at one time. She answers the phone, takes students' temperatures, copies testing booklets, cuts laminated materials for teachers, checks students in and out, and helps with many of the bus situations.

As we all know, a schools front office is one of the busiest places in the building.  Even at the most hectic times, Ms. Donna remains calm, is always professional, and makes sure our students are the top priority. She communicates very well with our parents and staff. Ms. Donna pays special attention to even the smallest of details, makes sure she gives accurate information, and keeps us all updated on changes in current events.

Ms. Donna has been a part of the South Elementary family for eleven years and part of the Mooresville Community her entire life.  When one wants to know the history or the current events of South and Mooresville, you only need to talk to one person, and that would be Ms. Donna. Ms. Donna is the glue that holds our South family together and helps each of us do our jobs more effectively!

Ms. Donna McConnell embodies our motto of TEAM...Together Everyone Achieves More.  This year at South is the Year of the “Super Hero” and Ms. Donna is our Wonder Women!  Because of her dedication and love for everything South, we believe Ms. Donna McConnell deserves to be recognized for going ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY!"

Board Approves hiring of MHS Football Coach

The Mooresville Graded School District approved the hiring of the new Mooresville High School Varsity Football Coach and Physical Education teacher, Mr. Thad Wells.

Coach Wells is a native of Richlands, VA, and a graduate of Radford University (B.S.’10) and Liberty University (M.A.T. ’12). He was previously the head football coach at Blacksburg High School (VA) where he led the school’s football team to a Virginia State Championship in 2016 and three playoff appearances with a playoff record of 7-2. Prior to Blacksburg, he served as a head coach in South Carolina and an offensive coordinator in Virginia.

Welcome Coach and Mrs. Wells and boys!
